The cheating scandal: Millions of Indian students had their NEET-UG entrance exams declared invalid after exam questions were leaked online.
Youth unemployment: The scandal was a spark for an entire generation already struggling with high unemployment and severe pressure within the education system. Many exam papers have been leaked in the past years.
The name “Cockroaches”: After a prominent judge mockingly (he has said later that he was misquoted) compared unemployed youth to cockroaches, the protest movement was launched as a joke under the name Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).
What happened: Meme wars and street protests. The youth used humor, parodies and memes on social media to mock the government and coordinate massive demonstrations on the streets. The police met the peaceful marches with tear gas and batons, leading to violent clashes and injuries to students in New Delhi. Well-known environmental and education activist Sonam Wangchuk went on a hunger strike for almost four weeks for the students
The results: The Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan was forced to resign due to a lot of public pressure. The student demands were met, the government agreed to provide financial assistance to affected families, drop criminal charges against protesters and tighten laws against cheating. The protests have thus officially been called off.
What I understood: Anyone, including students, should be allowed to do peaceful demonstration. It is a fundamental right in democracy. I read this in most of the articles. I loved the BBC coverage the most.
